NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) – If you watched us Wednesday morning, you may have seen a new friend of ours on NewsChannel 5. He is a 14-year-old boy who has had a very tough journey, but brings with him incredible positivity.

The way mom Ashley White sees it, do you have a few kids at home? Mornings should be a well-timed routine.

“We have five total,” Ashley said, holding a toddler as she spoke. “It’s a lot of juggling, but we’ll make it work.”

One of the children who got up and went to them was her son, 14-year-old Trey.

“Why do you have a farmer’s almanac?” I asked him as he held up a book.

“For next year’s weather so I can make the prediction!” he replied.

Something about Trey: he’s always loved the weather.

“He made his own reports during the pandemic,” Ashley said, remembering the home video weather reports Trey used to make. “He’s just weatherman Trey!”

It’s been two years since Trey suffered a stroke in his spinal cord.

“Trey went in for what was supposed to be a routine surgery,” Ashley said. “The next morning during recovery, he woke up and said, ‘Mom, I can’t feel my legs.’ The doctors told us he was paralyzed from the chest down and there was little to no hope of him walking again. It was something that shook us to our core.”

“When we got home, there was nothing set up that was accessible to Trey,” she continued. ‘We couldn’t get him up there. We spent the last two years cleaning out our kitchen that became Trey’s bedroom. He plays there. He eats there. He uses the toilet there. He did everything in our kitchen.”

A family’s life changed this week. The nonprofit Tucker’s House just made adjustments for Trey throughout the house.

“They installed an elevator in our house,” Ashley said. “They gave us vinyl flooring to make it easier for his wheelchair to move around. His room is now fully accessible. He has a touch light. He has an open closet. The doorways are wider.”

“I can take a bath now,” Trey added, referring to the changes to his bathroom. ‘I can shower now. I have my room now.’

Tucker’s House wasn’t finished yet. They knew about Trey’s love for the weather, so they made some connections.

“Are you nervous at all?” I asked Trey what was going to happen. “It doesn’t look like you are.”

“No, I’m not nervous,” he smiled. “I’m just excited.”

Trey and his family drove to NewsChannel 5.

“Do you want to come back this way?” Nikki-Dee Ray asked as he showed Trey around the studio. ‘I’ll show you the weather center. I see you have your almanac.’

“This is Talk of the Town right here,” Trey said, looking around the room.

“Yes sir, it certainly is,” Nikki-Dee replied. “You’re good!”

Oh, there’s something I forgot to mention. There’s someone who helped inspire Trey’s love for the weather.

“It’s good to see you!” Lelan Statom said as he walked into the studio to greet Trey. “It’s good to have you with us today!”

“I remember when you were at my school and I saw you!” Trey said, looking up at Lelan.

This visit was even more than just meeting Nikki-Dee and Lelan, even more than getting their signatures in that farmer’s almanac.

“I know you’ll knock it out of the park,” Lelan said, leaning toward Trey.

Trey went live on NewsChannel 5.

“The day has finally come that I can introduce you to one of my dear friends!” Nikki Dee said. “This is Trey!”

“I mean, that’s my baby,” Ashley said, looking from behind the studio cameras. “Honestly, it’s heartbreaking to see your child go through something you can’t see or fix, so to see him happy again means the world to me. This is a lifelong dream of his.”

“We’re going to have rain on Monday, 62 degrees,” Trey said on air.

“That’s right!” Nikki Dee said.

“On Tuesday, the high will be 56 degrees and the low will be 48 degrees,” Trey continued.

“You’re so amazing, Trey,” Nikki-Dee said, giving him a high five. “Thanks for coming and fixing it again. I think we should throw it to Ben now. Talk back to you, Ben!’

“Back to you Ben!”
